Chaos in Mexico City: Overturned Food Truck Shuts Down Major Overpass

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — A spectacular morning accident turned a routine commute into complete gridlock on Friday, July 31, 2026 after a popular local food truck lost control, struck a retaining wall, and flipped onto its side atop a major elevated overpass.

The incident transformed one of the capital's busiest thoroughfares into a parking lot, scattering cooking equipment across the lanes and triggering massive traffic delays during the peak morning rush hour.

The crash occurred shortly after 7:30 AM on a heavily traveled section of the city's elevated highway system. According to transit police, the driver of the commercial food truck appeared to lose control while navigating a sharp curve on the overpass incline.

The vehicle swayed violently, clipped the concrete barrier, and ultimately rolled over, completely blocking two primary lanes of traffic.

Miraculously, both the driver and a passenger managed to crawl out of the overturned vehicle with only minor cuts and bruises. They were treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and did not require hospitalization. However, the physical damage to the city's morning transit schedule was far more severe.

The force of the rollover burst open the food truck's secure service hatches, spilling a chaotic mix of propane tanks, industrial griddles, large cooking pots, and fresh ingredients across the asphalt.

Because of the elevated nature of the overpass, emergency response teams faced significant challenges reaching the site. Tow trucks and sanitation crews had to navigate backward through oncoming traffic corridors to clear the wreckage.

Firefighters quickly worked to secure the truck's exposed propane lines to eliminate any risk of a secondary fire, while municipal workers spent over two hours clearing the spilled fluids and heavy metal appliances from the roadway.

Mexico City's transit authority issued an immediate alert, diverting thousands of motorists toward lower-level access roads, which quickly became overwhelmed. The resulting gridlock backed up traffic for several kilometers, impacting secondary routes throughout the sector.

"I’ve been sitting here for forty-five minutes and haven't moved an inch," said one frustrated commuter who was stuck just behind the police cordon. "We can see the flashing lights up on the flyover, but there's absolutely nowhere for us to turn around."

Traffic investigators are currently looking into whether mechanical failure or excessive speed caused the vehicle to flip on the elevated curve. The overpass was fully reopened to the public just before midday, though transit officials warned that residual delays would likely persist well into the afternoon.
