Wuhan, China—The death toll from severe storms and tornadoes in the central province of Hubei reached seventeen on Wednesday. Hundreds of others remain hospitalized with injuries sustained during the weather event. The sudden onset of gale-force winds caught many residents off guard late Monday night.

State media reported that over 300 people were treated for injuries following the chaos. Nearly 5,000 houses sustained damage, with twenty-two buildings completely destroyed by the winds. The storm was characterized by its extreme speed and focused, violent gusts.

One logistics warehouse in Huanggang suffered total destruction during the gale. Security footage from the area showed high winds lifting heavy transport trucks several meters off the ground. Glass doors in several office buildings shattered under the pressure of the wind.

The event hit multiple cities across the region in rapid succession. Emergency responders worked through Tuesday to clear debris from major highways. Power grids in rural areas were significantly compromised, leaving many households without electricity.

Local officials described the weather as a severe convective event. It was marked by its sudden development and extreme wind speeds. Most of the casualties occurred when structures collapsed during the worst of the gusts.

Teams are still conducting structural surveys of buildings in the affected districts. There is concern that many homes remain dangerously unstable. Relocation efforts are ongoing for those whose living quarters were structurally compromised by the wind.

The regional government has called for an all-out effort to provide medical care to the survivors. Hospitals in the surrounding areas are on standby to handle the surge in trauma cases. Many of the injuries are related to debris impact and building collapses.
