Breaking Maritime Incident: Singapore-Flagged Ship Stranded in Major Indian Port

KOLKATA, India — A major maritime disruption unfolded along the Hooghly River on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 when a 148-meter Singapore-flagged container ship ran aground after suffering a sudden mechanical failure.

The vessel, identified as the Nawata Bhum, became stuck near Diamond Harbour, approximately 50 kilometers south of Kolkata, while en route to Netaji Subhash Dock at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

The incident occurred during late morning transit as the vessel was navigating the narrow river channel carrying 483 containers with over 10,000 metric tonnes of cargo from Port Klang, Malaysia.

According to port authorities and local officials, the ship’s steering gear jammed while attempting to negotiate a turn. The mechanical lockup caused the boxship to veer off course and embed its bow directly into the riverbank near the Nurpur ferry ghat.

Videos capturing the event show the vessel blowing its horn continuously as it approached the shoreline—a vital warning that alerted locals and prevented potential casualties.

"After realizing that the steering was jammed, the ship's master alerted people on the bank by constantly blowing its horn," an official confirmed. "Fortunately, there were no passenger ferries at the pontoon at the time, avoiding a major disaster."

No injuries were reported among the crew, and initial reports indicate that the ship's hull sustained no major breaches. However, the collision did cause structural damage to the concrete embankment and a adjacent road along the riverbank.

The Directorate General of Shipping and local port authorities immediately dispatched tugboats and engineers to the scene. After remaining lodged in the mud for several hours, emergency response teams successfully refloated the Nawata Bhum during the overnight high tide.

The Hooghly River serves as the primary maritime artery connecting the Bay of Bengal to the inland docks of Kolkata. The collision has renewed scrutiny over navigational hazards, strong tidal currents, and mechanical safety standards along the heavily trafficked waterway.

India's Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) has launched an official investigation to inspect the vessel's mechanical systems and review the circumstances leading up to the grounding before clearing the ship to complete its journey into port.
