Blaze in Tondo: Midnight Inferno Consumes Residential Block on Mercado Street

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — A massive fire ripped through a densely populated residential community in Tondo, Manila, late Saturday evening, destroying homes and leaving dozens of families displaced in one of the city's latest firefighting challenges.

The fast-moving blaze turned a quiet weekend night into a scene of panic as residents scrambled to evacuate the area.

The fire broke out at around 10:30 PM on July 4, 2026, inside a residential sector along Mercado Street, located within the jurisdiction of Barangay 50 in Tondo. Due to the close proximity of the houses—many constructed from lightweight, highly flammable materials—the flames spread with alarming speed. Within minutes, the single-alarm fire escalated, sending towering columns of thick smoke and bright orange flames visible from several blocks away.

Terrified residents rushed into the narrow alleys, carrying whatever belongings, pets, and valuables they could grab. Local barangay watchmen and volunteers immediately formed bucket brigades to slow the advance of the flames before professional help arrived.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded to the scene, deploying multiple fire trucks to combat the blaze. Firefighters faced significant logistical hurdles, including narrow streets heavily congested with parked vehicles and fleeing residents, which made positioning the massive fire engines exceptionally difficult.

Despite the tight quarters and intense heat, fire crews managed to surround the blaze, preventing it from jumping across the street to adjacent commercial buildings. "The wind was pushing the flames toward the rear structures, but our teams managed to establish a defensive line," a BFP official stated at the scene.

The fire was officially declared under control just after midnight, though emergency crews remained on-site well into the early hours of Sunday morning to douse stubborn hotspots and prevent a re-ignition. According to preliminary reports from the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, no fatalities have been recorded. A few residents and volunteer firefighters sustained minor burns, cuts, and smoke inhalation, and were treated immediately by medical teams stationed nearby.

The economic and human toll, however, is severe. An estimated 20 to 30 houses were completely destroyed or heavily damaged, leaving dozens of families suddenly homeless. Local government officials have already converted a nearby covered court into a temporary evacuation center to provide hot meals, blankets, and emergency medical assistance to the affected residents.

Arson investigators are currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire, with faulty electrical wiring being looked at as a primary possibility.
