Blaze in Leyte: Massive Fire Razes 20 Homes in Palompon

PALOMPON, Leyte — A quiet evening turned into a scene of panic and devastation as a massive fire swept through a residential neighborhood in this coastal municipality, destroying up to 20 houses. The incident has left dozens of residents homeless, though authorities report a miraculous escape from injuries or fatalities.

According to initial dispatches from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the blaze broke out past 8:00 p.m. in the residential area of Barangay Ipil. Fueled by closely built structures and warm evening winds, the flames spread with alarming speed, prompting local fire officials to quickly elevate the situation to a second alarm.

The scale of the inferno rapidly overwhelmed local first responders, triggering a mutual-aid response across the province. Firefighting crews and emergency personnel from the neighboring towns of Isabel, Villaba, and Merida rushed to the scene to assist the Palompon fire department in combating the wall of fire.

It took firefighters approximately three hours of continuous, aggressive operations to successfully contain and fully extinguish the blaze.

In a post-operation assessment, BFP investigators confirmed that while approximately 20 homes were reduced to ashes, no residents or firefighters sustained injuries during the chaos.

"The fire spread incredibly fast from house to house, but the immediate community alarms allowed families to evacuate their structures just in time," a local emergency responder noted.

Initial estimates by fire marshals place the aggregate structural damage to property at approximately ₱800,000.

Local government units (LGUs) and disaster risk reduction management offices have transformed nearby public facilities into temporary evacuation spaces to accommodate the displaced families. Local social welfare department branches are actively mobilizing to provide hot meals, hygiene kits, and emergency clothing to those who lost their belongings in the blaze.

An investigation has been launched by the BFP to determine the exact cause of the fire, with investigators currently reviewing the point of origin and interviewing eyewitnesses.
