PANAMA CITY / ODESSA — International maritime authorities are on high alert following a fatal drone strike on a commercial merchant vessel in the Black Sea, which has left one civilian crew member dead and two others wounded.
Panama's Maritime Authority (AMP) confirmed the targeted attack, raising fresh concerns over the vulnerability of international commercial shipping corridors.
The incident took place during transit through the Black Sea. Unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) targeted the Panama-flagged vessel, piercing its exterior and causing an explosion on board.
Emergency damage control protocols were immediately activated by the crew. Despite the impact and structural damage, the vessel was remarkably able to maintain propulsion and continue on its course. Tragically, one sailor succumbed to fatal injuries during the attack. Of the two surviving wounded crew members, officials report that one remains in serious, critical condition.
In a late-night press briefing, the AMP stated it has "activated the relevant protocols to gather official information on the incident and maintains communication with the parties involved".
While the official statement did not explicitly declare the exact origin of the drone strike, international maritime bodies have sharply advised all commercial traffic to avoid traveling through highly contested northern waters, specifically pointing to Ukrainian and Russian maritime zones in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
"Civilian crews, merchant vessels, and maritime infrastructure supporting humanitarian and export routes remain under attack," warned regional transit officials, condemning the strike as an escalation against neutral global commerce.
The targeting of a Panama-registered ship hits at the very heart of international logistics. Panama operates the world's largest ship registry, accounting for roughly 16% of the global merchant fleet.
As investigators look into the strike, the shipping industry faces mounting pressure to reroute vessels, potentially spiking insurance premiums and disrupting critical grain and supply lines flowing out of European ports.
