Beneath Japan's Summer Heat, A New Machine Offers Workers a Brief Refuge From the Relentless Sun

Summer usually belongs to sunlight, warm pavement and the slow movement of air through open windows. In Japan, however, some workplaces are beginning to make room for an entirely different experience: a sudden enclosure of cold air in the middle of the working day.

The “Do Hiemon Box,” a human-sized cooling booth, is designed to cool workers rapidly after exposure to high temperatures. The equipment is being marketed to workplaces where employees spend long periods outdoors or in hot industrial environments.

The technology has attracted attention as Japan experiences increasingly demanding summer conditions. Construction sites, factories and warehouses are among the environments where workers can be exposed to heat while continuing physically demanding tasks.

The booth offers a very different approach from ordinary air conditioning. Rather than cooling an entire building, it creates a small, enclosed space designed specifically for a person who needs to lower body temperature during a break.

According to Gulf News, distributor Trusco Nakayama had sold more than 300 units since April. The equipment is priced at around 1.5 million yen, or approximately $9,400, placing it firmly within the category of specialized workplace equipment.

The idea also reflects a broader change in how workplaces think about heat. Cooling is no longer simply a matter of comfort in some environments. For workers exposed to intense temperatures, rest and recovery can become part of maintaining safe working conditions.

Construction workers are among those who may benefit from such systems because their work often takes place outdoors, where shade and conventional indoor cooling are unavailable. Warehouses and factories can face different challenges, particularly when machinery and enclosed spaces contribute to elevated temperatures.

The technology is also an example of how environmental pressures can create unusual industrial products. A changing climate can influence not only energy systems and architecture but also the equipment workers use during an ordinary day.

Whether cooling booths become common remains uncertain. Their cost, size, electricity requirements and suitability for different workplaces will influence adoption. Companies will also need to consider how such equipment fits alongside hydration, scheduling, ventilation and other heat-management measures.

For now, the human-sized cooling booth offers a striking image of adaptation. In the middle of Japan's summer, a small room filled with cold air provides a temporary contrast to the heat outside, illustrating how technology can sometimes respond to environmental change in surprisingly tangible ways.
