Belgium Battles Its Largest Wildfire in Modern History

Belgium is battling its largest wildfire in modern history in the High Fens nature reserve near the German border. The blaze has burned about 2,700 hectares and approached to within roughly 3 kilometers of Germany. Authorities ordered around 600 residents to evacuate parts of Wallonia due to shifting winds, heavy smoke, and the risk to homes. Firefighters supported by EU civil protection assets—helicopters and water bombers—are working to bring the fire under control as conditions remain difficult.
