BALLARI — A wave of grief and anger has swept through Kampli town in Karnataka's Ballari district following the tragic death of a 24-year-old woman. Driven to the edge by continuous the mental harassment and dowry-related torture, the young bride allegedly died by suicide at her parents' residence.
The incident has once again ignited a fierce public conversation surrounding domestic abuse, toxic marital environments, and the failure of families to protect young women.
The deceased, identified as Aishwarya, had married Pradeep Kumar—a veterinarian employed with the state's Animal Husbandry Department—over a year and a half ago after a romantic relationship. What began as a love marriage, however, quickly deteriorated into a nightmare.
According to grieving family members and local police investigators, Aishwarya was subjected to persistent mental harassment and dowry-related abuse from her mother-in-law from the very first day of the marriage.
Despite Aishwarya’s repeated pleas and complaints about the mounting distress, her husband, Pradeep, reportedly refused to intervene. Officials stated that he remained a "mute spectator," failing to support his wife or shield her from the escalating hostility within the household.
"I cannot leave my husband. I cannot stay in my hometown forever," Aishwarya wrote in a heartbreaking final letter recovered by the police.
Unable to bear the unrelenting toxic environment, Aishwarya left her husband’s home on May 14 to seek refuge at her parental house in Kampli town. However, the emotional toll proved too severe. On May 17, she was found dead, leaving behind a detailed death note that explicitly named her husband and mother-in-law as the direct catalysts for her drastic step.
Following a formal complaint registered by the victim's father, the Kampli Police moved swiftly to inspect the scene and secure evidence. Under the direction of Ballari Superintendent of Police Suman D. Pennekar, authorities have officially arrested both Pradeep Kumar and his mother.
The case has been registered under stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)—including Section 80 (dowry death) and Section 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives)—alongside provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Police have stated that the investigation is being intensified as they analyze the digital evidence and the victim's final written testimony to ensure swift justice.
