Airspace Breach: Romanian F-16 Jets Down Intrusion Drone in Historic First

BUCHAREST, Romania — A Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jet shot down an unidentified drone that breached the country’s airspace on Friday morning, July 24, 2026. The incident marks the first time the NATO member state has actively intercepted and destroyed an intruding drone over its own territory following a series of regional airspace violations.

The shoot-down was confirmed by Romanian officials on Friday, highlighting escalating tensions along NATO’s eastern flank.

The intrusion began at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time (0639 GMT) when military radar systems picked up an unknown unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) roughly 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Sulina on the Black Sea coast.

In response to the breach, NATO air defense protocols were triggered. The Romanian Defence Ministry scrambled two local F-16 fighter jets alongside two Italian Eurofighter Typhoons currently stationed in Romania under NATO air policing mandates.

The aircraft tracked the rogue drone across southeastern Romania as it flew deeper into domestic airspace. At approximately 11:00 a.m. (0800 GMT), after assessing the trajectory and ensuring the target was clear of civilian infrastructure, a Romanian F-16 pilot engaged the drone.

"The area was uninhabited, so the pilot was able to shoot without any risk," officials stated in a social media update.

The drone was successfully neutralized near the town of Padina in Buzău County, located in the eastern part of the country.

Local authorities confirmed that fragments of the destroyed drone fell into an isolated wheat field. The prefect of Buzău County reported to journalists that the impact caused no injuries or material damage on the ground.

An official military investigation has been launched to determine the exact origin and model of the downed aircraft. While formal attribution is pending, an army source noted that investigations are heavily focusing on the ongoing regional conflict, pointing out that Russian forces have consistently used the airspace adjacent to Romania to launch strikes.

Romania shares a critical 650-kilometer (400-mile) land border with Ukraine. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has regularly targeted Ukrainian port infrastructure across the Danube River, leading to multiple incidents where stray drones or missile debris have crossed into Romanian territory.

Prior incidents had seen rogue drones crash into Romanian border areas—including an incident in late May where a veering drone struck a residential apartment building in Galati, injuring two people. However, today’s engagement represents the first time the Romanian Air Force has taken direct kinetic action to eliminate an airborne threat inside its borders.

Similar airspace incursions have increasingly plagued other front-line NATO members, including Poland and the Baltic states, fueling sustained international concern over the vulnerability of Western alliances' sovereign borders.
