WOPŁAWKI, Poland — A major emergency response, including a medical rescue helicopter, was deployed on Monday morning, June 1, 2026, following a rear-end collision between two buses carrying school-age children in northern Poland.
The accident occurred on a regional road in the northeastern village of Wopławki, located in the Warmian-Masurian province.
According to initial findings from local police, the 65-year-old driver of the lead bus was attempting to execute a right turn when a second bus struck the vehicle from behind. The impact involved a total of 52 people. This included 42 individuals, primarily schoolchildren, traveling on the first bus which had been chartered for a school trip, as well as 10 passengers, including children, aboard the second bus operating a regular transit service.
Due to the high number of young passengers involved, emergency services responded in force. An air ambulance helicopter was scrambled to the scene amid early fears that an 11-year-old boy had sustained a severe spinal injury. However, following an on-site medical examination, the boy was cleared of major trauma.
"An 11-year-old boy reported neck pain, but following examination he remained at the scene," Kamil Golon, a spokesman for the local fire service, told broadcasters.
Ultimately, no serious injuries were reported, though two individuals required immediate medical attention. A children's supervisor in her 40s was transported to a local hospital with a suspected head injury.
Following the crash, the uninjured children remained at the scene under the care of emergency responders until they were picked up by their parents. Traffic on the regional road was temporarily disrupted while police conducted their initial investigation into the exact cause of the collision.
