Across Indonesia’s Coastal Roads and Island Routes, A Burning Ferry Leaves a Quiet Mark on Morning Travel

Before sunrise, the waters between Bali and Lombok are usually part of a familiar rhythm. Ferries leave their ports carrying passengers, vehicles and goods, moving through a strait that connects two important Indonesian islands.

On Wednesday morning, that routine changed when the passenger ferry Putri Yasmin caught fire while traveling from Bali toward Lombok. Indonesian authorities later reported that 172 people had been rescued and the body of a 19-year-old passenger was recovered.

The ferry had departed from Padang Bai in Bali and was heading toward Lembar on Lombok when the fire began at around 4:15 a.m., according to Indonesia's search-and-rescue authorities.

The emergency response quickly expanded across the water. Indonesian naval vessels, patrol boats and rescue craft joined the operation, while a helicopter was used to conduct aerial observation.

Conditions made the rescue more difficult. Waves reached around four meters, according to rescue officials cited by the Associated Press, adding another layer of uncertainty as rescuers attempted to move people away from the burning vessel.

The number of people aboard also became an important part of the response. Initial reports based on the ferry's manifest listed 131 people, but authorities later said 172 people had been rescued, indicating that the manifest did not reflect the full number of passengers and crew.

The ferry was carrying vehicles and motorcycles as well, reflecting the practical role of Indonesian ferries in moving people and transport between islands. Such vessels form an important part of the country's extensive maritime network.

For passengers, however, the familiar journey changed almost instantly. A trip that began as an early-morning crossing became an evacuation, with people leaving the vessel while rescue crews worked around them.

The incident also occurred less than two weeks after another Indonesian ferry, the Mutiara Sentosa 2, caught fire off Java, killing at least five people. The proximity of the two incidents has drawn renewed attention to ferry safety and emergency preparedness.

Authorities continued rescue and assessment operations after the Putri Yasmin fire. The confirmed death of one passenger placed a somber note over an operation in which dozens of people were brought safely away from the burning ship.

The Lombok Strait eventually returned to its wider rhythm of vessels, currents and distant shorelines. But Wednesday's emergency left behind a clear account: 172 people were rescued from the ferry, while one passenger died after the vessel caught fire during its journey from Bali toward Lombok.
