About 300 people were evacuated from a neighborhood in Sarcelles, a Paris suburb with a large Jewish community, after French police discovered a suspicious car near the Great Synagogue and nearby public venues.

Authorities say the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC) was called to inspect the abandoned vehicle late Saturday night. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez later said the weapon was found in the vicinity of the synagogue as well as a cinema and restaurants.

Officials confirmed that law enforcement recovered “a long firearm,” described as a military-grade weapon, and that measures were taken in the area while prosecutors opened a judicial investigation.

So far, authorities have not identified any suspects or established a motive, and they said they do not yet know whether there was an imminent threat.
