SINGAPORE — A 69-year-old taxi driver was taken to the hospital on Tuesday morning, June 16, 2026 after his vehicle reportedly lost control and self-skidded along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE).
The accident occurred during the morning commute on a stretch of the PIE leading towards Changi Airport, just before the Eunos exit. Police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel were alerted to the scene shortly after the vehicle veered off its path.
Preliminary investigations suggest that no other vehicles were involved in the incident. The taxi reportedly skidded on the wet tarmac, colliding with the expressway's side barriers before coming to a halt. Images shared on social media showed the taxi positioned awkwardly against the shoulder lane with visible damage to its front bumper and side panels.
Emergency responders arrived quickly to assess the situation. Despite the sudden impact of the crash, the elderly driver managed to escape severe trapping.
The SCDF confirmed that the 69-year-old cabby was found conscious and coherent at the scene. He was immediately attended to by paramedics and conveyed via ambulance to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for further medical treatment and observation.
The solo accident caused minor traffic congestion along the PIE heading eastward, as Land Transport Authority (LTA) wardens and police cordoned off the affected lane to safely tow the damaged taxi away and clear debris from the road.
Traffic smoothed out within an hour of the cleanup. Police investigations into the exact cause of the self-skidding accident are currently ongoing.
