1 Million Evacuated: Japan Braces for Devastation as Two Mass Storms Converge

TOKYO, JAPAN — More than one million people across Japan have been advised or ordered to flee their homes as the archipelago braces for the combined fury of two converging tropical storms. Severe Tropical Storm Mekkhala and Tropical Storm Higos are barreling toward the mainland, threatening to spark widespread flooding, catastrophic landslides, and severe infrastructure damage.

With torrential downpours already hammering the southern and western regions, top government officials are warning that the nation faces "extremely heavy rain at warning levels."

Meteorologists are tracking a highly volatile situation as both storms swirl closer together in the Pacific Ocean. Forecasters warn this proximity could trigger the "Fujiwhara effect"—an atmospheric phenomenon where two nearby cyclical storms interact, dynamically altering each other's trajectories and making their ultimate path and strength highly unpredictable.

Even more concerning is a stationary seasonal rain front lingering directly over Japan. As Mekkhala and Higos pump massive amounts of warm, moist tropical air into this existing system, rainfall amounts have skyrocketed.

Parts of Nagasaki Prefecture have already logged a staggering 600 mm of rain, while Kumamoto and Saga prefectures have exceeded 500 mm. This widespread danger zone is expected to sweep across Kyushu and Shikoku before slamming into densely populated areas of Honshu, including Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo.

The scale of the incoming disaster has thrown Japan’s famed transit network into chaos and forced massive industrial suspensions.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, more than 200 domestic flights have been canceled—including 120 key routes operated by Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways to and from Okinawa and Kagoshima. Dozens of bullet train services are suspended, and major expressways have been sealed off due to zero visibility and standing water.

The economic toll is already mounting, with manufacturing giant Toyota suspending operations at its plant in Kyushu due to storm-related road closures, while Nissan has announced plans to halt multiple production lines. Additionally, military drills have been paused, forcing the Japanese military to cancel the highly anticipated maiden flight of a V-22 Osprey transport aircraft to Miyako Island, which had been scheduled as part of joint exercises with the United States.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has mobilized local municipalities across 13 prefectures to orchestrate the massive evacuation effort. A maximum Level 5 emergency alert—the highest possible warning level—was declared for parts of Seika town in Kyoto Prefecture after a major landslide struck. Rivers in Kyoto and Osaka are rising dangerously toward their banks, threatening catastrophic urban flooding.

Early casualty reports indicate one person has been seriously injured, with three others sustaining minor injuries. Dozens of residential buildings have already been inundated by floodwaters, primarily in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima.

"We offer our heartfelt sympathy to all those affected," Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stated during an emergency press briefing. "The government is cooperating fully with local municipalities to take rapid emergency disaster response measures."

As ground saturation reaches critical maximum levels across the country, authorities are imploring the public to move to designated community shelters or higher ground immediately, warning that the worst of the double-storm system has yet to make full landfall.
