KUALA TERENGGANU, Malaysia — A promising 18-year-old, Wah Han Keong, was tragically killed in a horrific vehicular accident on Tuesday afternoon, May 19, 2026, after a freak collision caused a utility pole to pierce the van he was traveling in.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:36 p.m. along Jalan Losong Feri, near Kampung Losong Panglima Perang.

According to preliminary police investigations, a Volkswagen Golf GTI driven by a 43-year-old man was traveling from Kuala Terengganu town toward Muzium Losong. The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid and strike a Public Works Department (JKR) lamp post on the road divider. The impact caused the pole to collapse, and the Volkswagen subsequently veered into the opposite lane, colliding with a Nissan Vanette. The falling utility pole pierced through the windshield of the van, striking the front passenger, Wah Han Keong, in the head.

Wah, who was assisting his father, Wah Tee Tun, with electrical wiring work, was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries. His father, who was driving the van, sustained minor injuries, as did an eight-year-old child who was a passenger in the Volkswagen.

The tragedy has deeply affected the local community. Wah’s father, who witnessed the harrowing event, described his son as a gentle and hardworking young man who had been preparing to enroll in a polytechnic program in June to pursue automotive engineering.

"I tried calling out to him, but his head was already decapitated and was on the floor at my feet," the grief-stricken father recounted to local media. "We had already prepared the necessary supplies for his studies, but we never expected that a car accident would take him away".

Kuala Terengganu police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving. The victim’s remains were sent to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) for a post-mortem examination.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, and dashcam footage of the incident has been circulating on social media, drawing widespread sympathy from the public.
