Air Force Jet Crashes Near Islamabad; Training Flight Ends in Disaster

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A military training mission ended in disaster on Wednesday morning, May 20, 2026 when a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fighter jet suffered a catastrophic mid-air emergency and crashed in the eastern Punjab province. The incident triggered immediate panic among local residents as the burning aircraft plunged toward the ground.

The aircraft, identified as a Karakorum K-8P jet trainer operating from PAF Base M.M. Alam, was conducting a routine operational training sortie when it developed a severe engine malfunction.

As the aircraft began to lose altitude rapidly over the Kamar Mushani area in the Mianwali district—located just a short flight path away from the capital region—the two pilots on board initiated emergency ejection procedures.

Footage captured by eyewitnesses and widely circulated on social media showed the dramatic moment the jet went down, alongside video evidence of two distinct parachutes deploying shortly before the final impact. Both aviators successfully ejected and landed safely. Unverified videos showed local residents rushing to the scene to attend to the two downed pilots, who reportedly sustained minor injuries during the forceful ejection but are otherwise in stable condition.

"Based on initial feedback, the crew acted courageously to steer the failing jet away from densely populated civilian clusters before pulling their ejection handles," a local security source stated.

The aircraft slammed into an open field, completely destroying the airframe upon impact. While the debris field ignited a localized fire, emergency response teams and PAF recovery units quickly cordoned off the area to secure the wreckage and extinguish the flames.

Fortunately, air force officials confirmed there were no civilian casualties or significant damage to private property on the ground.

The K-8P jet trainer, a twin-seat aircraft jointly developed by China and Pakistan, serves as a cornerstone platform for advanced pilot training within the PAF. While the fleet generally maintains a solid operational track record, military experts note that the high intensity of routine training regimens naturally elevates the risk of technical anomalies.

Air Headquarters has formally ordered a Board of Inquiry to conduct a comprehensive forensic investigation into the precise cause of the engine failure.
